  • TA 101: A guide to the teaching assistantship

    This popular workshop highlights teaching assistant responsibilities, effective classroom management, learning centered office hours, effective grading and maintain professional boundaries with students and faculty supervisors. This was designed for new teaching assistants, but current TA’s wishing to learn some new skills are welcome to attend as well.

  • Getting through the stack: Grading for learning

    Do you find grading to be time consuming and frustrating? Do you spend hours writing comments on student papers but are doubtful that your comments are implemented, or even read? We can help. This workshop will give you strategies on how to grade efficiently and effectively. We will discuss grading rubrics, how to provide meaningful, learner centered feedback on assignments, exam questions and papers.

  • Graduate student coffee hour

    This is an informal opportunity for graduate students to come together, share teaching ideas, concerns and resources. Come join us for coffee, and bring any teaching questions you have, an assignment you may wish to share, or a particular teaching issue you would like to talk about.

  • International teaching assistant training

    Co-sponsored by International Student Services, this workshop will include topics such as U.S student culture, alignment of student/instructor expectations, effective communication and public speaking and classroom management.

  • Grad instructor 101: Planning a course from start to finish

    This workshop will introduce graduate students to the basics of course planning: developing and writing learning goals and objectives, active learning (both convincing them that it works, and how to implement it), effective lecturing, appropriate use of PowerPoint, and exam and rubric development. Offered middle of spring semester, or beginning of fall.

  • Grad Instructor 102: Beyond the basics of course design

    This workshop focuses on alignment of course objectives with assessments, creating meaningful assignments and planning effective class sessions. Participants are introduced to active learning techniques such as pair and share, focused listing, and discussion.
