Concept Inventories

Concept Inventories are research-based assessment instruments designed to measure the intuitive comprehension of a specific subject, e.g., the conceptual understanding of Newton’s Law of Motion. Concept Inventories and similar tools are used in both introductory and advanced science and engineering courses. Generally, concept inventories are administered twice in a semester, the first week of class and a time near the final week or two of instruction. A comparison of the two sets of responses can provide evidence of improved teaching and learning strategies.

Faculty interested in using an inventory can either:

  1. administer it on paper during class using scanable answer sheets, or
  2. schedule time in the e-Testing/ITS Lab for students to take it on a computer.
