The Penn State Course in College Teaching
Description:
This highly successful course combines the best elements of a collaborative learning environment with those of a seminar on pedagogy. Readings from the current literature on teaching and learning, and a rotation of unit instructors from the Schreyer Institute’s experienced staff, prepare participants to design and implement both practical and reflective instructional activities in the form of “Certificate Assignments.” Rigorous group discussion and peer review serve to assess effective aspects of assignments and identify areas in need of redesign. The impact of the course is evident in the number of participants who intend to implement new teaching practices as a result of taking the course.
Objectives:
This course draws upon information from the current teaching and learning literature and provides an opportunity for instructors, professors, and graduate student teachers to share ideas and strategies for successful teaching. The course materials and discussions provide participants with practical and innovative ways to improve their teaching effectiveness by illustrating how to:
- apply good principles of course design and planning
- integrate teaching and assessment strategies to enhance student learning
- effectively collect, analyze, and use student feedback
- reflect on personal beliefs and practices about teaching and learning
- locate resources on teaching and learning available at Penn State
Requirements:
The Course in College Teaching is free and open to anyone who teaches at Penn State, from TAs to senior faculty.
