Teaching Communities Commonwealth Campus New Faculty Group 2023-2024

The Schreyer Institute welcomes new faculty to Penn State and invites them to participate in monthly conversations with their peers and Schreyer Institute consultants. Throughout the academic year, group members will discuss topics like engaging students in the classroom, finding mentors, advising students, and using student feedback. In this supportive, collegial community, participants network with other new faculty members and meet experienced Penn State educators who will share their lessons learned and unique perspectives.

Register for the Commonwealth College New Faculty Group.

All faculty of any rank or title are welcome, but the group is especially for faculty who are either new to Penn State, new to their teaching role, or new to teaching in general. Members meet six times throughout the academic year to discuss topics such as: advice for new faculty, what students value in teachers, lecturing creatively, and evaluating your teaching. Members vote on which topics they wish to discuss.

Participants who attend at least four conversations in an academic year qualify for a small grant to be used for teaching materials.

In addition, the first 25 attendees at our meetings will receive a copy of Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning by James Lang. The group will read and discuss selections from this book
